Oysters are the most mature and most delicious in March, around the feast of St. Joseph (19/03). On March 23, first Sunday after St. Joseph, shellfish from Mali Ston, winemakers from Peljesac and tourist association are organizing an Oyster Festival on the

seafront in Mali Ston. This gastronomic tourist event is excellent for all oyster lovers. Besides delicious oysters, you can enjoy in selected domestic wines from Peljesac Peninsula and different cultural performances specific for this area. Professional conferences of the cultivation and trade of shellfish are also part of this significant manifestation.

Oysters from Ston are well known since ancient times, and they are mentioned as well in written sources from the 17th century. The story of oysters as aphrodisiac is known since ancient times when it was served on renaissance banquets for Dubrovnik aristocracy. The legend of the magical properties of the shells was not a secret either for the Austrian emperors who often enjoyed on their menus .
